Raising Healthy Kids

Raising healthy kids is not as difficult as people make it out to be. However, parents would need to know about the advantages and benefits of a healthy diet as opposed to a junk diet. A junk diet may be very easy to prepare, but it is definitely going to be made up of processed foods, lots of salt, chemical preservatives, soy products and other ingredients which are going to be potentially harmful for the body in the long run. On the other hand, if the child gets used from childhood to a diet of whole grain products, cereals, lentils, beans, fresh and organically grown fruit and vegetables, he is going to include them in its diet automatically when he grows up.

Now, how best can a parent get a child to eat fresh fruit and vegetables, when the parent is not used to including those items in his diet, himself. It is a case of "monkey see monkey do" so if the parent eats plenty of processed foods, food stuffs made of high fat, soybean products, high-fat dairy products, etc., the child is definitely going to acquire a taste for them. This is why, if you are thinking of raising healthy kids, you need to take a bit of trouble about their diet. You may want to encourage them to snack between meals on fruit and nuts. You will also like them to crunch on raw vegetables, when they are feeling peckish.

A child's eating habits develop and mature from the age of two to eleven. They love experimenting with different foodstuffs. So, if you can encourage them to believe that fresh fruit and vegetables are really good for them and they are going to grow as strong as, say, their favorite star or cartoon character, well, this is one way of encouraging them to eat healthy.

Healthy Kids Meals

If adults have a hard time staying healthy, so do kids. Coming up with healthy kids meals so that they stay in tiptop shape is a common challenge for parents. Here are some tips which can help you come up with delicious and healthy recipes.

The first on the list is to always have a plan for the week. If your kid is just starting with his diet, make exceptions for certain days of the week. You can give your kid the regular favorites once a week, in moderate portions. For example, start the week with a healthy soup and salad for the first three days and then reward him with pizza at the end of the week. This way, he doesn't feel deprived and can still eat the foods that he constantly craves for.

Ask your kids to prepare the meal with you. Make cooking an enjoyable activity and so they differentiate the healthy and not-so-healthy foods. By letting them help prepare the meals, they appreciate food better because they cooked the food themselves.

Healthy Kids Lunches

My mother always assumed that when I went to school each day I was getting a healthy lunch through the school system. For the most part, she was right. On the weekends, she made sure that we had healthy kids lunches, even if they were quick and easy. School lunches are not always what they use to be. For most of us, we had a good lunch, with the option to buy something sweet afterward, if we had the money. Today, schools are overridden with bad food choices and your kids are falling for it each day without realizing what they are doing to their health.

If you came from a school much like the one I attended, the idea of fast food for lunch was something you got as a senior, when you could leave campus for lunch. It was never something you would find in your school cafeteria. Other kids did not have to wait that long, and they did not have to leave the school, as they had fast food options right there in their school. The idea of healthy kids lunches was not important in these schools, as they needed the money they got for allowing this to pay for important school functions and programs. The kids gained on one hand but lost on the other.

Today, there are still schools that have trouble getting children to have healthy kids lunches because they still have very unhealthy options. As you know, many kids will go with what tastes the best to them with little regard or knowledge as to what they should be eating. Healthy means nothing to children who still feel as if they are going to live forever. It is not until well into adulthood that the ramifications of an unhealthy diet become a reality to be feared. Many parents are unaware of how poorly their children are eating.
